A new New Deal
Today I saw an interesting letter to the editor in The Daily Northwestern. It discusses the economic crisis that the United States is facing.
“The middle class is bearing the greatest burden of this crisis and the housing meltdown and the resulting financial downturn is making it increasingly difficult for the majority of Americans to get the credit they have come to depend on… At least one million students next year will not receive their college loans as a result of the financial meltdown….For the first time in more than half a century, a child born in this year will on average neither live longer nor more prosperously than his or her parents. In short, the foundation of the American dream - upward mobility - has become increasingly untenable.”
This is the sad reality of the world we live in today. If you live in the midwest you can attend The Chicago Health Policy Workshop at Northwestern University (May 24th, 2008) which will bring together students from across the Midwest to hear from leading health policy experts at the state, and national level. Students will have the opportunity to work on their own policy ideas and present them for feedback from their peers and the day’s speakers.
To learn more about this event you can visit the Roosevelt Institution which is a non-profit, non-partisan national network of campus-based student think tanks.
To prepare yourself for lives challenges it is best to care about the issues surrounding us which can help sharpen your mind and help you gain clarity. It is important to hear what other leaders in the field have to say about issues, formulate and discuss your ideas with others, and write/present your ideas.
