Designing Your First Web Page
For those of you out there who are just getting started with trying to build websites, you’re probably looking for a beginner software for webpage design. This can be very difficult. There are so many products on the market that vary in complexity from extremely difficult to basic WYSIWYG-type software (i.e. What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get, meaning it’s more like drag-and-drop).
If you’ve ever seen or heard mention of the Internet language called HTML, you probably also know that most people are afraid of it. Hypertext-markup-language is what the acronym stands for and when you first see it, it will likely appear very strange to you. It would probably be a steep learning curve for most to start off trying to learn HTML. Why not just start with a WYSIWYG program? Most are easy to understand and will help you better grasp the basics of web page design at a beginner level.
Learning HTML will seem very difficult to most people. It’s odd form makes no sense at first, but before long the logic of it all will begin to come clear. Learning just a few of the commands will help “break the code”, so to speak. A good instructor will introduce it slowly until it makes sense. Looking at a page of source code will begin to make sense in no time. Webpage design doesn’t have to be difficult if you’re given the basic tools to work with at the right time and in the right doses.
You may want to consider starting out at a place where you don’t even have to worry about software for webpage design at all. Two websites come to mind that fit this description. One is Squidoo.com and the other is Weebly.com. Both use WYSIWYG editors and both are very easy to learn to use. Both also have excellent tutorials and help sections. You can create websites in pretty quick fashion at both locations. Let’s talk about Squidoo first.
Squidoo lets you create what they call “lenses” that become your bone fide website. It will have its own domain name of your choosing, but the URL will also contain the name “squidoo” in it also. Some people are turned off by this, but it’s all for free and is extremely simple to learn to use. These two characteristics in my mind make it a no-brainer, especially for us newbies over sites requiring you to learn to use software for webpage design. You choose and pre-stage what squidoo calls “modules” on the side of the webpage in whatever vertical order you want and then go to the middle of the page and fill them in. Some are text modules, which you type into just like a word processor and others are for things like uploading images or graphics supplied on the site. In one afternoon you can master webpage building at squidoo. It’s even kind of fun and it’s free!
Weebly is free too. They have a similar drag-and-drop type of software for webpage design, but more options than Squidoo. Whereas Squidoo requires you to pre-build the site with modules, Weebly lets you build the site as you go. They also offer web templates, which allow your website to look very professional with one click of the mouse. And you can change them out just as easily to try different looks. Adding YouTube footage is quick to do also.
There are other WYSIWYG websites out there, but for pure ease of use starting out, I would stay away from trying to learn to use more difficult software for webpage design and go with one of these until you gain more confidence. Have some fun!
