As you’re considering studying for an MCSE, you’ll fall into one of two camps. You may want to come into the computer world, and your research tells you the IT industry has lots of demand for those with appropriate certifications. Alternatively you are perhaps a knowledgeable person attempting to polish up your CV with a qualification such as MCSE.

As you find out about computer training companies, don’t use any who reduce their costs by failing to up-grade to the current Microsoft version. A great deal of money is secured by many training colleges who get money for exam fees in advance. A number of students don’t take them for various reasons and so the company is quids-in. Believe it or not, providers exist that rely on that fact – as that’s very profitable for them.

Also, ‘Exam Guarantees’ often aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. The majority of organisations won’t be prepared to pay for you to re-take until you have demonstrated conclusively that you won’t fail again.

People attracted to this sort of work are usually quite practically-minded, and won’t enjoy sitting at a desk in class, and endless reading of dry academic textbooks. If this could be you, try the newer style of interactive study, where learning is video-based.

The latest home-based training features interactive discs. By watching and listening to instructors on video tutorials you’ll learn your subject via their teaching and demonstrations. Then you test your knowledge by interacting with the software and practicing yourself.

All companies must be able to demonstrate some examples of the type of training materials they provide. Expect video tutorials, instructor led classes and a variety of interactive modules.

Some companies only have access to just online versions of their training packages; sometimes you can get away with this – but, imagine the problems if internet access is lost or you get intermittent problems and speed issues. It’s preferable to have actual CD or DVD ROMs that don’t suffer from these broadband issues.

Qualifications from the commercial sector are now, very visibly, beginning to replace the traditional academic paths into the IT industry – so why is this the case?

As demand increases for knowledge about more and more complex technology, industry has of necessity moved to specific, honed-in training that the vendors themselves supply – in other words companies such as Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe. Often this saves time and money for the student.

Obviously, a reasonable portion of associated detail has to be covered, but essential specialisation in the exact job role gives a commercially educated person a real head start.

If an employer knows what they’re looking for, then they simply need to advertise for the particular skill-set required. The syllabuses are set to exacting standards and do not vary between trainers (in the way that degree courses can).

One area often overlooked by potential students thinking about a course is the concept of ‘training segmentation’. This basically means the way the course is divided up for drop-shipping to you, which makes a huge difference to how you end up.

Often, the staged breakdown pushed by the company’s salespeople doesn’t suit all of us. What if you find it hard to complete all the modules inside of their particular timetable?

In all honesty, the best solution is to obtain their recommendation on the best possible order of study, but get everything up-front. You then have everything in the event you don’t complete everything within their ideal time-table.
