SEO terminology explained

When starting out in a new business there are always a lot to learn. One of the biggest obstacles for a beginner is usually the terminology. In SEO and MMO there are a lot of words and shorts of the same word that might be unclear to the beginner. I will try my best in this article to give a short and precise explanation of the most important ones.

SEO – Short version of “Search Engine Optimization

This one you will come across on a daily basis. It is by far the most used word in the business. Generally it refers to the way that we make our sites as search engine friendly as possible. It is a way to get your site high in the search engine result pages. As a rule we split SEO into two separate things, On and Off page Optimization.

On-page

Refers to the SEO that is done ON the site itself. On page optimization is done by letting the search engines know what your site is really about. It usually consists of these steps: Getting the right URL, choosing the best title for your blog, writing a good description, post titles, post headers and post content. The key is to use your keywords in a wise manner.

Off-page optimization

This basically comes down to one thing: Backlinks. Keyword anchored backlinks to be exact. Use your keywords as anchor for the backlinks that you obtain to your site. Be sure that you vary your anchors.

MMO – Used as a short for Make Money Online

Make Money Online is a term that is used about every way to earn money online. It is a term that covers everything from selling ad space to playing poker. In SEO we usually refer to it in terms of affiliate marketing, Adsense and similar.

SERPs – Short for Search Engine Result Pages

These are the pages that the search engines provide you when you search for a term. If you are working with a site it is obviously good to be as high in the SERPs as you can for as many keywords as possible.

Keyword ” The term that you or others are searching for.

Keywords are what makes a search engine work. You have to know how to get you site ranking high for keywords that actually have traffic. The more keywords you rank for, the better.

Long Tails – Keywords with added words

Basically your keyword in a context. A lot of people search for these long tails. If you have a site that uses “Abdominal Training” as the main key word, you long tail keyword can be “abdominal training for better health” or “how to do abdominal training”.

Backlinks (sometimes referred to as inbound links)

In short backlinks are the links that other pages have pointing to your sites.

PR ” Pagerank

PR is a system that Google use to tell how important they think a site is. The Pagerank scale starts at zero. If a site has a rank of zero it is basically unimportant in Google’s eyes. If it has a rank of 10 on the other hand, it is VERY important. Just a handful of sites actually has a PR of ten.
