Each level should have a specialised course, so verify that the course is right for you in advance of spending your money. Search for a company that takes the time to learn what you’re looking to do, and can help you work out how it will all work, before they select your course.

You have to be sure that all your accreditations are what employers want – forget studies that lead to in-house certificates.

The main industry leaders like Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA have nationally acknowledged proficiency programmes. Huge conglomerates such as these will make your CV stand-out.

Students often end up having issues because of a single courseware aspect very rarely considered: The way the training is divided into chunks and delivered to your home.

By and large, you will purchase a course taking 1-3 years and get sent one module each time you pass an exam. While this may sound logical on one level, consider this:

What happens when you don’t complete every section? And what if you find the order of the modules counter-intuitive? Without any fault on your part, you might take a little longer and not get all the study materials as a result.

Ideally, you want everything at the start – meaning you’ll have all of them for the future to come back to – as and when you want. You can also vary the order in which you complete each objective as and when something more intuitive seems right for you.

Student support is absolutely essential – find a program that provides 24×7 direct access, as not obtaining this level of support will severely put a damper on the speed you move through things.

Never buy study programmes that only provide support to trainees via a message system outside of normal office hours. Colleges will give you every excuse in the book why you don’t need this. The bottom line is – you need support when you need support – not when it’s convenient for them.

Keep your eyes open for colleges that have multiple support offices around the globe in several time-zones. Each one should be integrated to enable simple one-stop access as well as 24×7 access, when it suits you, with the minimum of hassle.

Always pick a training provider that cares. As only round-the-clock 24×7 support delivers what is required.

It’s likely that you probably enjoy fairly practical work – the ‘hands-on’ individual. If you’re like us, the trial of reading reference books and manuals is something you’ll force on yourself if you absolutely have to, but it doesn’t suit your way of doing things. So look for on-screen interactive learning packages if books just don’t do it for you.

Many studies have proved that long term memory is improved when we use all our senses, and we get practically involved in what we’re studying.

Locate a program where you’re provided with an array of CD and DVD ROM’s – you’ll learn by watching video tutorials and demonstrations, followed by the chance to fine-tune your skills in fully interactive practice sessions.

When considering retraining, it’s crucial that you have in mind your requirements from the position you’d like to train for. You need to know that you would be more satisfied before your energies are focused on changing the direction of your life. It’s good sense to regard the end goal first, to avoid disappointment:

* Is collaborating with others important to you? Is that as part of a team or with many new people? It could be working by yourself with your own methodology would give you pleasure?

* What’s important that you get from your chosen industry? (If it’s stability you’re after, you might think twice about banks or the building industry right now.)

Despite what some people believe, it isn’t a bunch of techie geeks looking at screens every day (though those jobs exist.) The majority of jobs are occupied by people like you and me who want to earn a very good living.

One useful service offered by some training providers is a Job Placement Assistance program. This is designed to help you find your first job in the industry. Because of the massive need for more IT skills in Great Britain right now, there’s no need to place too much emphasis on this feature however. It isn’t so complicated as you might think to land the right work once you’re trained and certified.

Many junior support jobs have been bagged by students who are still learning and have yet to take their exams. At least this will get your CV into the ‘possible’ pile and not the ‘no’ pile.

Be sure to ask for testing modules that will allow you to test your understanding along the way. Simulated or practice exams help to build your confidence – so you’re much more at ease with the real thing.

Make sure you don’t get caught-up, as many people do, on the certification itself. Your training isn’t about getting a plaque on your wall; you should be geared towards the actual job at the end of it. Stay focused on what it is you want to achieve.

It’s not unheard of, in some situations, to thoroughly enjoy one year of training only to end up putting 20 long years into a tiresome job role, as an upshot of not doing the correct research at the outset.

You also need to know how you feel about career development, earning potential, and whether you intend to be quite ambitious. It’s vital to know what (if any) sacrifices you’ll need to make for a particular role, which particular exams are needed and in what way you can develop commercial experience.

Chat with a skilled advisor that has a background in the industry you’re considering, and could provide a detailed run-down of what you actually do in that role. Contemplating this before commencement of any study course makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it?

However, avoid waiting until you have passed your final exams before bringing your CV up to date. Right at the beginning of your training, enter details of your study programme and place it on jobsites!

You may not have got to the stage where you’ve got to the exam time when you land your first junior support position; however this can’t and won’t happen unless you’ve posted your CV on job sites.

Generally, you’ll receive better results from an independent and specialised local recruitment consultancy than any course provider’s recruitment division, because they’ll know local industry and the area better.

Not inconsiderable numbers of trainees, it would appear, put a great deal of effort into their studies (for years sometimes), only to give up at the first hurdle when trying to get a good job. Introduce yourself… Do everything you can to let employers know about you. Don’t think a job’s just going to jump out in front of you.

Fuel prices are continuing to rise as gas and oil is steadily running out. Carbon emissions will have to be reduced. Members of the public are being urged to ease back on their consumption, and look to efficient renewable energy sources. In Britain grants of up to 80 per cent are being made available (and in some instances 100 per cent) to cover the labour costs of certain energy efficient improvements. So domestic engineers with the correct skill-sets can find themselves in high demand. It’s therefore a good idea commercially that your electrical or plumbing training includes working with green energy systems. If you’ve been in the industry for a while, check out the new courses and certifications in green engineering.

Planet earth provides us with a rich source of renewables from which to extract more energy for our own use. By harnessing the energy from the sun, the wind or the tides we can create alternative sources of power. We’ve used wind and water for many years, but it’s the sun that provides energy for many newer replenishable systems. Consequently there’s a growing demand for green engineering work.

Domestic hot water pipes can be connected to solar water heaters to provide free heat to the system. We’ve had solar thermal systems in Britain since the seventies, so today’s models are now very well developed. A UK family could expect to get most of their hot water from a modern solar system from June to September. This lessens their impact on the environment by reducing carbon dioxide emissions by something like 400 to 750 kg a year. Collection equipment comes in the form of the more efficient evacuated tubes, or the perhaps more visually attractive solid flat plates. Both are easy to install and maintain, and ideally should be fitted to a south facing roof.

Another use for solar power is to create electricity. For this, we need photovoltaic or PV panels. As with solar collectors that heat water, these cells need to be exposed to the most light and sun possible, so a south-facing roof is ideal. They also need an inverter to convert the direct current electricity to alternating current. From there the AC electric is connected to the electrical consumer panel that delivers electricity around the house. Householders can expect a photovoltaic system to provide around 40 per cent of their annual electricity, and so reduce both their bills and carbon footprint significantly. Anyone with a system that produces more electricity than the household consumes can automatically sell their excess to the national grid. In April 2010 Government legislation in the UK increased the amount energy companies have to pay to buy back electricity, making the initial investment more attractive. Installation of Solar PV panels usually comes under ‘permitted development’ which doesn’t require planning permission. A quick check with the local authority will confirm this.

Ground Source Heat Pumps create heat sources from solar energy that naturally exists in the earth. Heat pumps are connected to great lengths of underground geothermal piping that contains a non freezable substance. The fluid becomes warm as it circulates inside the pipes and thus heat is transported to the pump. The most efficient way to use this heat is in underfloor heating systems, but it can also be used for heating water in radiators. Ground source heat pumps will lower household fuel bills. They need a small amount of electricity to run them, but can produce four or five times as much as they consume.

When you train to work in the green installations industry, you’ll pick up a variety of worthwhile skills. Look for a course that will take you through all the domestic essentials, including health & safety, laws and regulations and if relevant guidance on starting your own business. As solar energy and heat pumps will give you the most work, you’d be sensible to focus on those. Courses in domestic green skills and qualifications are developing fast, to keep up with the increased demand caused by government incentives. If you have a special interest in water recycling, look for options that include rainwater and grey water harvesting.

The law now dictates that all homes sold in Britain must supply the new owners with an Energy Performance Certificate to illustrate energy usage and where efficiencies can be made. Savings in some cases can run into thousands of pounds a year. The government is offering householders substantial grants to cover certain installation costs where work is undertaken by appropriately qualified Green Engineers. That’s merely the beginning though. By the year 2016, the law states that all new houses will have to produce a minimum of 15 per cent of their energy from replenishable supplies. The time is quickly coming when everyone will be looking for alternative energy solutions for their homes. Demand for skilled installers is about to soar!

Why pay exorbitant ‘Exam Guarantee’ costs (often hidden in the cost) – when good quality study materials, the proper support and commitment, effort and practice with quality exam preparation systems are the factors that really get you through.

Commercial qualifications are now, most definitely, taking over from the traditional routes into the IT industry – but why should this be?

Corporate based study (in industry terminology) is far more effective and specialised. The IT sector has become aware that specialisation is what’s needed to meet the requirements of a technologically complex world. Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA dominate in this arena.

Clearly, a reasonable portion of relevant additional knowledge needs to be learned, but precise specialisation in the required areas gives a commercially trained student a real head start.

Think about if you were the employer – and you required somebody who had very specific skills. What should you do: Wade your way through reams of different degrees and college qualifications from graduate applicants, trying to establish what they know and what trade skills they have, or pick out specific commercial accreditations that perfectly fit your needs, and then choose your interviewees based around that. You can then focus on how someone will fit into the team at interview – rather than on the depth of their technical knowledge.
